Media work & Summaries

Some of the images appear more than once.  This was not my intention.  I was trying to remove one of them, but ended up losing the other.  At this point, it will have to just stay.

Weekend Homework:  Media

With the Internet not quite working yesterday, during my absence, we will have to come back to some of the ideas explored in yesterday's lesson on viewing commercials and look at the ad from the last posting and begin to take it apart.

For homework, I would like you to brainstorm, in your Language notebook an idea you have for creating a media text.  If you remember, Media is a "line of communication from a person or persons with an intended audience" (from Media Minute video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBP_kswrtrw).  A form of media may include some of the ideas you see in the following poster..

https://mediaforliteracy.wordpress.com/2014/04/13/681/ Social Media is missing from this image.  Perhaps it is meant to be included in the overarching "Internet" category.

The media text you will create will be focussed on selling something.  The form of media that you select (a radio commercial, an ad from a magazine, a poster or billboard design, a web page) will be up to you.

The aspect of selling is one of the key concepts of Media Literacy, which you designed on your cubes, as well as indicated on the chart that follows:

When planning, think of these three things, along with creating a rough sketch of your idea:

1. THINK OF WHAT YOU WILL BE CREATING/ DESIGNING AND SELLING
2. WHO YOUR AUDIENCE (buyers) MAY BE
3. WHERE YOU WILL TRY TO SELL IT

This is only a brainstorm and part of the creative process.  As we review this homework on Monday, your idea will develop more.  Focus on coming up with an idea for something that appeals to who you are (cooking, athletics, literature, mechanical, hobby oriented....).

Possible Idea (a short Proudfoot example)

What:  design an insole that will help people have more comfort, while in their shoes for someone Audience:  people with sore feet (athletes, those who walk a lot)
Where:  online and in shoe stores

possible sketch:

just kidding...I did not draw this:  https://mediaforliteracy.wordpress.com/2014/04/13/681/

Summary Work

This work is being done in class.  I am trying to get the students in the habit of working on something in class and following the process from start to finish.

On the last blog post, I had images of my highlighting and jot notes.  Today, I modeled the beginning stages of writing a summary:

This is only a draft and may be modified.  We will continue this on Monday.

Homework:

- brainstorming a media text with the three things I outlined + sketch

Enjoy your weekend.
