Thursday, November 7

Thanks to those parents and guardians who responded to the change in interview date change from Thursday to Monday.  I have confirmed some times with you and those notes will be going home today.

Final copies of the written portion of the Myths will be all in, by the end of the week and we will slowly begin to look at the Oral Communication/Drama portion of this unit:  STORYTELLING!

Our skills in writing continue to grow with our Sentence writing unit.  I believe I already posted about learning about Compound Sentences.
The next step... (whoops!) ... will be looking at Complex Sentences and the different conjunctions that are used with them.  The list of conjunctions is posted in the class.  Here is a photo, from when I had them out in the hallway for an activity:

When we have a test/evaluation on the skills of sentence writing, this list will be made available for students to use.  THE STUDENTS WOULD NOT BE EXPECTED TO MEMORIZE THIS LIST.

In Math, we have moved into the first unit of Place Value, to be combined later with Measurement, and had the students doing some hands on tasks:

After building, the students are to record the value of the structure they built in two different ways:  In standard form (a "regular" number, say 1 762) and expanded form (1000+700+60+2).  The Grade 8s will take it a step further and represent it with exponents.  Due to the limitations of the keystroke functions on this blog, I am not able to represent it at the moment.

Here are some more photos from our structure building/BASE 10 Activities:

This structure, which has started to fall down, is written in Standard Form, and also broken down in Expanded Form.

Jackson, pondering his structure

This incredibly large structure is now dismantled.  I went through each piece and broke it

down in Expanded Form (paper on right) and checked that against the answer that Caleb came up with in his notebook (on the left).  His adding was off.  His number ended in an odd number and only even numbers were used in the construction of this monstrosity!
I can post a screenshot that I have used from a Promethean lesson to illustrate my point:

Our once a week Reading Buddies dropped by today for a visit:

 Have a good evening.
