a haiku & the need for courageous conversations





I wrote this Haiku when I attended my ETT Federation Day.  It was based on observing a colleague leave a workshop because she did not agree with what she was hearing from the facilitators.  I arrived slightly late to the presentation and wondered if the 4 Agreements for Courageous Conversations was shared.



This is something I have used in my Learning with both Students and Teachers and found this to be a productive way to engage in conversations about topics that challenge the status quo.  When we fail to engage and use our voice and retreat into a sense of cynicism, we often miss opportunities to explore topics from new points of view.  Courageous conversations are not about "attacking" a particular person.  I like to think of it as opportunities to explore and see things from multiple perspectives by taking into account power and privilege.  When we fail to have or be open to these conversations, things become dangeous.
